Waterfalls at Lake Ohara-12X16

Waterfalls at Lake Ohara-12X16

I first visited the Yoho National Park and hiked up to see these falls about 5 years ago. I did a quick little watercolour sketch on location. I took lots of photos and have done several paintings now from the amazing images I captured on that three day hiking / painting trip. These waterfalls are remarkable high up in the Rocky Mountains. The sound of the gushing water and sparkle of the light in the water is unforgettable. I wanted to try to capture this inspiring scene in encaustic (painting with hot wax)

Set Apart-30X30

Set Apart-30X30

I created this piece in encaustic, using melted and hot natural bees wax and oil paints. I rub in the oil paints with my fingers. This was created using a photo I took while on a hike in the YoHo National Park in the Rocky Mountains of Canada. It was a bit of a hazy day on my hike, but what caught my eye was the single pine tree standing on the edge of the water. Sometimes we are set apart, sometimes we need to stand alone and apart from others.

Lake Ohara Pathway-24X24

Lake Ohara Pathway-24X24

This was created using natural bees wax melted and oil paints. All the colours are rubbed in with my fingers essentially staining the wax. It’s a slow layering process of hot wax, oil paints, rubbing it off, burnishing it with a torch and then sealing it again with more hot wax. This is from a favourite scene during my three day hiking trip to Lake O’hara in the Rocky Mountains. There is actual rock paths like this in several areas in this incredibly rare area to gain access too. Paths are a recurring theme in my work. I’m so drawn to paths and the wonder or mystery of were they will lead us. This piece is currently available at the http://www.linehamhousegalleries.ca

A Walk at Dusk-12X12

A Walk at Dusk-12X12

Inspired from an evening walk on our farm late in the fall, as the leaves fell and blew across our path. The sound of distant honking geese also confirms that winter will soon be here. I loved simplifying the landscape in this way and working in encaustic really challenges me.
